Mission 4 of 14Core20 minutes

Multiplication and Division

Use times tables, factors, multiples, arrays, and division facts.

Big Idea

Multiplication is repeated equal groups; division splits a total into equal groups or finds group size.

Understand it first

Equal groups

6 x 4 means 6 groups of 4, or 4 groups of 6.

Factors

Factors multiply together to make a number.

Division check

A division answer can be checked by multiplying back.

Method Ladder

Use this same ladder every time you meet this topic.

  1. Identify the equal group size and number of groups.
  2. Use known times tables or break the calculation into parts.
  3. For division, ask what multiplication fact matches it.
  4. Check by reversing the operation.

Worked example: Calculate 18 x 7

  1. Break 18 into 10 and 8.
  2. 10 x 7 = 70.
  3. 8 x 7 = 56.
  4. 70 + 56 = 126.
