Mission 11 of 14Core20 minutes

Measurement and Units

Convert units and solve measurement problems accurately.

Big Idea

Units tell you what the number measures, so converting units is part of the answer.

Understand it first

Metric links

1 m = 100 cm and 1 kg = 1000 g.

Same unit first

Calculations are safer when all numbers use the same unit.

Reasonableness

A door is measured in metres, not millimetres or kilometres.

Method Ladder

Use this same ladder every time you meet this topic.

  1. Identify the starting unit and target unit.
  2. Choose multiply or divide using the unit link.
  3. Convert before calculating if needed.
  4. Write the final unit clearly.

Worked example: Convert 3.5 m to cm

  1. 1 m = 100 cm.
  2. Metres to centimetres means multiply by 100.
  3. 3.5 x 100 = 350.
  4. Answer: 350 cm.

Fix It Lab

Read these before the quiz. They are the traps that lose marks.

  • Common mistakeMixing units in the same calculation.
  • Common mistakeLeaving the unit off the answer.
