Mission 9 of 14Higher25 minutes

Algebra

Simplify expressions, substitute values, and solve one-step and two-step equations.

Big Idea

Algebra uses letters to represent numbers and relationships.

Understand it first

Expression

An expression has terms but no equals sign, such as 3x + 2.

Equation

An equation has an equals sign and can be solved.

Balance

Whatever you do to one side of an equation, do to the other side.

Method Ladder

Use this same ladder every time you meet this topic.

  1. Simplify like terms if possible.
  2. Use inverse operations to undo the equation.
  3. Keep both sides balanced.
  4. Substitute the answer back in to check.

Worked example: Solve 3x + 2 = 14

  1. Subtract 2 from both sides: 3x = 12.
  2. Divide both sides by 3: x = 4.
  3. Check: 3 x 4 + 2 = 14.

Fix It Lab

Read these before the quiz. They are the traps that lose marks.

  • Common mistakeCombining unlike terms such as x and x squared.
  • Common mistakeDoing an operation to only one side.
  • Common mistakeForgetting to check the answer in the original equation.
