Method Ladder
Use this same ladder every time you meet this topic.
- Simplify like terms if possible.
- Use inverse operations to undo the equation.
- Keep both sides balanced.
- Substitute the answer back in to check.
Worked example: Solve 3x + 2 = 14
- Subtract 2 from both sides: 3x = 12.
- Divide both sides by 3: x = 4.
- Check: 3 x 4 + 2 = 14.
